On Friday, 25th November, Alison Pitt(S6), Andrew Brown(S6), Noor Court(S5) and Stuart Wightman(S5) left Girvan Academy to make their way to the University of the West of Scotland to take part in the UKMT senior maths challenge regional final.

Due to Mr Stafford’s immense driving skills they arrived in Paisley with an hour to spare.  The group decided to soak up some big city culture by visiting the Paisley museum and really enjoyed browsing the different galleries. As they left the museum, other pupils looked worried about competing against these smart and intelligent looking Girvan Academy pupils in their new blazers.

The event attracted competition from some very prestigious schools in Scotland.  However, not to be put off by that they competed in the first round – The Group Round: ten mathematical questions which the teams had 40 minutes to solve.

The Crossnumber Round: a mathematical crossword puzzle with one pair from the team solving the across clues and the other pair the down clues.

The final round – The Mini-relay Round (6 Relays – 6 mins each) – was busy as there was no time to spare between relays.  Now were the nail-biting results, with Girvan Academy desperate to improve on last year’s position of 17th and also the added pressure of knowing that Mrs Collings’ son was also in the competition.  An excellent result was achieved by these four pupils who walked away in 5th place, receiving certificates for their participation.  A good day was had by all pupils and they were delighted with 5th place.  Perhaps fortunately they did not win as they would have faced a trek to London in February to compete in the final.
