Team Fusion – South Ayrshire Business Challenge winners 2011.

On the 16 November 2011 Schools from South Ayrshire were invited by NATS to take part in a “Dragon’s Den” style Business Challenge.  The competition took place at NATS (National Air Traffic Service) at their £180m Prestwick Centre where just under half of the UK’s air traffic is controlled from.

Students were set the challenge of developing a business idea to deliver a product or service in which NATS would be keen to endorse. The pupils had to submit a business plan which identified the business idea, the type of investment required from NATS, and how the idea would help to benefit NATS in the form of social enterprise to contribute to the local community.

 

Team Fusion from Girvan Academy included Andrew Brown, Sophie McIntyre and Jay Taylor, three enterprising pupils in 6^th year.  After much discussion they decided on a mentoring business whereby NATS would deliver workshops for pupils in South Ayrshire covering elements of business.  This would be followed by an interview day and local businesses would be invited to take part at events organised within South Ayrshire schools.  Andrew, Sophie and Jay worked hard and created an exiting and informative presentation to deliver to the Dragon’s on the day.

On the morning of the event there were a number of interesting presentations delivered by NATS employees.  These presentations gave the pupils a valuable insight about how businesses operate in the “real world”.  After being treated to an excellent lunch it was competition time!

Team Fusion delivered an excellent presentation against stiff competition from Belmont, Prestwick and Kyle in their heat to book their place in the finals with two teams from Wellington.  Andrew, Sophie and Jay then had to deliver their presentation to all pupils, teachers and employees from NATS in the auditorium.  They overcame their nerves and rose to the occasion by delivering a confident and professional presentation.  They didn’t even falter under some probing questions from the Dragon’s and went on to take the winners trophy.
