ASFA U14 Winners 2012

May 15, 2012   //   by School Admin   //   Blog, News  //  No Comments

Girvan Academy U14 school football team took to the pitch to play Grange Academy in a 6 goal thriller at Dam Park Stadium, Ayr on Wednesday 9th May 2012.

Girvan started the game on the back foot and were able to withstand numerous attacks by Grange which came to nothing. Grange however, did score first in the 20th minute play but it was disallowed for offside after a marvellous decision by the far side assistant referee. This scare seemed to give Girvan the extra motivation they needed as they pushed forward after the resulting free-kick and scored the opener from a beautiful cross from the left by captain Jamie Dorans which was met by the head of Brandon Rice (1-0).

Shortly after the restart of play Girvan broke down the right hand side of the field of play from a superb David Gillespie pass which slipped Brandon Rice through 1 on 1 with the keeper who with no intention to win the ball pulled Rice down and a penalty was awarded and the keeper was correctly sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

The penalty was calmly scored by Jamie Dorans (2-0) who captained the side on this fantastic cup final appearance for the school. After scoring the second goal Girvan dominated play and never looked like conceding with Daniel Storrie and Sean Scobie being untested at the back. The third goal of the game was scored by Brandon Rice who was set through on goal and calmly slotted home past the Grange keeper (3-0).

At the half time whistle Girvan were cruising and were cheered off the pitch by the fantastic support from the pupils and teachers who made the journey to Dam Park for the game. The second half got under way and Girvan calm out the starting blocks and scored two goals in quick succession, a wonder strike from the edge of the box by Kieran Balfour (4-0) and a great strike across the keeper by Jamie Dorans (5-0) ensured the Ayrshire Cup would be coming home to Girvan Academy.

The game was wrapped up after 65 minutes and the boys could breathe easy. Grange however, did score towards the end, after some poor marking by the defence (5-1).

The game overall was played in great spirit and Girvan received no cautions throughout the game.

The players were a credit to the school and their families and based on the performance of the young S2 team there will surely be more success for this group of boys in future school’s competitions.

It should be mentioned too the hard work and organising Mr David Strachan put in to the team to ensure the players reached the final and also in ensuring there was a supporters bus travelling to the game.

Coca Cola ‘Real Business Challenge’ – 22nd November 2011

Dec 19, 2011   //   by School Admin   //   News  //  No Comments

Girvan Academy pupils recently took part in the Coca Cola ‘Real Business Challenge’ at the Scottish Finals in Stirling.  During the competition the group of S3 pupils had to design a  sustainability initiative to encourage more people to recycle.  The pupils presented an excellent idea to the judges, combined with both radio advert and advertising logo boards.  Although, they did not get through to the national finals, it was a huge achievement in reaching the Scottish finals. Well done to all involved.

S5/6 Interview Day – 2nd December 2011

Dec 19, 2011   //   by School Admin   //   News  //  No Comments

As part of our career education and post-school destination planning programme, on Fri 2nd Dec, Girvan Academy held its second S5/6 Interview Day, supported by Mapeley Estates Management Company.

A scenario was created that a major leisure and cultural centre was opening in Girvan, and that a management company was recruiting for a wide range of posts, from an Operations Manager to a Cinema Assistant.

S5 and S6 pupils ‘applied’ for one of these posts and were then interviewed, in a very formal and realistic manner, by guest interviewers from local and national employers and businesses. including Turnberry, Asda, Mapeley and the Royal Navy.

165 pupils were interviewed in Carrick Buildings, during a very hectic morning. The interviewers completed an assessment matrix, and at the end of the event 17 pupils were the successful candidates and ‘got the job’. The successful candidates received a certificate and a gift voucher. All pupils received feedback from their interviews with tips to improve.

The evaluations from pupils, interviewers and parents were extremely positive, and we have already pencilled in next year’s event in Dec 2012, with interviewers already booked up!
