Ethos and Aims
Physics plays a part in everybody’s life. The aim of Standard Grade Physics is to give students an understanding of the physics behind everyday life and to inspire pupils to find out more about how things work. Standard Grade also introduces problem solving skills and prepares them for further study in the subject. Physics is a fascinating and rewarding subject and should be irresistible to those of an inquisitive nature. Higher Grade Physics aims to foster an interest in modern developments in Physics and to encourage students to make critical and evaluative comments. The course seeks to illustrate and emphasise situations where Physics is important in everyday life.
Biology is the study of all living organisms, together with the interactions they have with each other and with their environment. In Standard Grade Biology you will learn to ask questions, make observations, evaluate evidence and solve problems. As Biology is a practical subject. You will take part in a wide range of experiments as well as develop your ICT skills. In S5/6 the aim of the subject is to provide detailed understanding of biological concept, facts, ideas and techniques and of the application of biology in society and industry. To develop the problem solving skills and practical skills associated with biology. To develop your interest in biology and your environment and allow you to make informed decisions regarding biological issues such as genetic engineering and the environment.
Chemistry is the study of the chemical world around us, from the chemistry of the petroleum industry to the biochemistry of the human body. Concepts are expanded and developed as the level of the course increases.
At S3 the department offers Standard Grade Science which is a general science course. The aim of this course is to study the world around us and ourselves and covers aspects of Biology Chemistry and Physics.
